Culture & Traditions -Darjeeling
Darjeeling witnesses a broad spectrum and diverse cultures mainly because of sharing borders with Bhutan and Nepal
Darjeeling is one of the most colourful hill stations in the country. Chiefly tenanted by the Gorkhas of Nepali background, it reflects the true shades of diversity. Apart from that, this hilly region is also populated by other indigenous tribal groups such as Sherpas, Limbu, Bhutias, Lepchas, Tamangs, Gurungs, Rai and Newars. Other societies migrated to Darjeeling and settled there include Anglo-Indians, Tibetans, Chinese, Bengali, Biharis and Marwaris as it is also a great hub of business apart from tourism. The three main religions followed at Darjeeling are Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity and the most normally spoken lingos of Darjeeling are Nepali, Gorkha, Tibetan, Hindi, Bengali and English. The travel industry and the tea industry are the two major occupations that sustain the economy of Darjeeling. Aside from its world-famous Darjeeling Tea, other crops like maize, paddy, millets, potato, ginger and cardamom are also extensively grown here. Their way of life and heartwarming hospitality tell us a lot about their culture and traditions filled with royalty and elegance.
